Bretxa Public Market

The Bretxa Market is recognizable by its neoclassical stone facade, defined by arched windows and a roof topped with the city’s shield and a clock. Designed by local architect Antonio Cortázar and built starting in eighteen seventy, the building sits at the edge of the Old Town. Its name, which means breach in Basque, recalls the military history of this specific ground. During attacks in seventeen nineteen and eighteen thirteen, invading forces broke through the city walls at this very location, creating the gaps that eventually gave the market its name.
