The Plaza de la Constitución is defined by the rows of numbered balconies lining the colorful facades that enclose the space. Built in eighteen seventeen by the architect Pedro de Ugartemendia, this square was created as part of the effort to reconstruct the city following a devastating fire in eighteen thirteen. The buildings were designed with a neoclassical uniformity, surrounding a central area that once functioned as a bullring for the city.
