Herria Taberna sits in the old town of San Sebastián on the corner of Ikatz Kalea and Juan de Bilbao Kalea. It belongs to a network of establishments known as herriko tabernas, a term translated from Basque as bars of the people. These venues have historically functioned as meeting places for supporters of the abertzale left, a movement advocating for Basque nationalist causes.
