Kornhauskeller Restaurant & Bar

The Kornhauskeller occupies a cavernous, barrel-vaulted sandstone cellar beneath the Kornhaus, a building constructed between seventeen eleven and seventeen eighteen. Once the municipal granary, the structure stored grain on its upper floors while the basement housed barrels of wine to satisfy the city's tithes. Today, visitors reach the underground dining hall by descending a grand staircase into a space dominated by twelve massive pillars. These columns are painted with images of women in traditional Bernese costumes, while the surrounding ceiling vaults feature frescoes of musicians in Renaissance attire, alongside mythological figures like dragons and mermaids.
