Memorial to the Marine Engine Room Heroes

historic

This granite monument at Pier Head stands forty-eight feet tall, topped by a gilded flame that catches the light against the river air. Designed by Sir William Goscombe John and unveiled in nineteen sixteen, the structure takes the form of an obelisk rising from a square, chamfered pedestal. Life-size, naturalistic sculptures of stokers and engineers occupy the faces, portrayed at work with their tools. The base features allegorical figures representing the four classical elements of earth, air, fire, and water.
