Meiggs Wharf once reached two thousand feet into the San Francisco Bay, an extraordinary length for a wooden pier in the eighteen fifties. It anchored the northern shoreline near today’s Powell and Francisco Streets, designed by real estate developer Henry Meiggs to divert the city’s shipping trade toward his own properties on Telegraph Hill.
