The El Capitan Theatre and Hotel is identified by a Mexican Baroque façade with ornate detailing that remains on Mission Street, even though the grand auditorium behind it was demolished in nineteen sixty-four. Built in nineteen twenty-eight, this landmark was once a massive entertainment complex for the Ackerman and Harris vaudeville circuit. When it first opened, it stood as the second-largest theater in San Francisco, with over three thousand seats and a Wurlitzer organ intended to accompany silent films.
