The Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design once occupied a site at twenty-two fifty-five Mariposa Street that was locally known as the Rock House. The building, a former men's dormitory, became the school's final home in nineteen sixty after Rudolph Schaeffer moved his institution from its previous location on Grant Avenue. Schaeffer, an artist and educator who had studied color theory in Munich, founded the school in nineteen twenty-four under the name Rudolph Schaeffer School of Rhythmo-Chromatic Design.
