Southern Exposure

Southern Exposure is a nonprofit gallery and arts organization that has operated in San Francisco since nineteen seventy-four. It began within the walls of Project Artaud, which was then located inside a former American Can Company factory. The organizers initially operated as the American Can Collective, but they faced a lawsuit from the corporation that held the name. To resolve the conflict, they rebranded in nineteen seventy-six as Southern Exposure, a title chosen to reflect their location near the artistic activity in the south of Market area and their commitment to showcasing the work of emerging creators.
