The First African Baptist Church stands at twenty-three Montgomery Street, its brick exterior overlooking Franklin Square. Built in the late eighteen fifties, it remains the first brick building in the state of Georgia to be owned by African Americans. Enslaved people and free congregants crafted the bricks and raised the structure themselves, working after long days of laboring in the fields.
