Johnson Square

Johnson Square is marked by a fifty-foot white marble obelisk that rises from its center, designed by architect William Strickland in the style of an Egyptian needle. Established in seventeen thirty-three, this is the oldest and largest of the twenty-two squares that form the backbone of Savannah. It was laid out by James Oglethorpe and Colonel William Bull, and named for Robert Johnson, the colonial governor of South Carolina who supported the early Georgia settlers.
