Waving Girl Statue - Florence Martus

The Waving Girl statue in Morrell Park depicts a woman holding a handkerchief, accompanied by a bronze collie dog at her side. This bronze monument commemorates Florence Martus, a local resident who for forty-four years greeted every ship entering and leaving the port of Savannah. Between eighteen eighty-seven and nineteen thirty-one, Martus stood watch from her home on Elba Island, waving a handkerchief during the day and a lantern by night to salute passing sailors.
