St John's Reformed Episcopal Church

St. John's Reformed Episcopal Church is a Gothic Revival structure on Anson Street, distinguished by the Heart Gate that stands at the entrance to a commemorative garden on the grounds. The gate was designed by Philip Simmons, a prominent Charleston ironworker and church member. The building itself dates to eighteen fifty, when it was constructed as a chapel for a community of free and enslaved Black Presbyterians.
