Water Street occupies a valley once known as Spring Hollow, an area that defines the geography of the Spring Hill neighborhood. During the mid-nineteenth century, this low-lying stretch served as the natural drainage path for the surrounding ridges, collecting water that flowed toward the nearby valley floor. Early residents and brick-makers frequently gathered in this vicinity, relying on the water-fed holes for their daily needs before the area was fully urbanized and connected to the city's municipal water supply.
