Bedford Playground Park is defined by a large, craggy outcrop of porphyry rock that rises abruptly from the ground, a remnant of a commercial quarry that operated here starting in the eighteen sixties. This site, bounded by Love, Water, and Quarry streets, was transformed into a public space for children in nineteen twenty-seven. It was the third playground established by the Playground Association of Queensland, an organization that drew inspiration from American models of urban recreation to provide fresh air and supervised play for families in densely built, inner-city neighborhoods.
