Customs House

historic

The Customs House is defined by the large, copper-sheathed dome that rises above the northern end of Queen Street, where the building sits perched along the Brisbane River. Completed in eighteen eighty-nine, this Victorian Free Classical landmark was designed by Charles McLay to oversee the bustling river trade when Queensland was still a British colony. Its grand colonnades and prominent position reflect the immense wealth once generated here through the collection of customs duties on goods arriving from overseas and other colonies.
