The Queensland Performing Arts Centre is recognizable by the rippling, translucent glass facade of its newest addition, the Glasshouse Theatre, which cantilevers toward the street. Opened in nineteen eighty-five, this complex serves as the primary home for the state's major performing arts companies, including the Queensland Ballet and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. It stands on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, occupying a site with a long theatrical history; the Cremorne Theatre inside the complex takes its name from a celebrated vaudeville house that operated nearby from nineteen eleven until it burned down in nineteen fifty-four.
