The Commissariat Store Museum

The Commissariat Store Museum is a sturdy stone building on William Street, distinguished by the contrast between its original two levels of heavy Brisbane tuff and sandstone, built in eighteen twenty-nine, and a third storey of rendered brick added in nineteen thirteen. It stands as one of only two structures remaining from the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement, which operated between eighteen twenty-four and eighteen forty-two. Convict gangs performed the heavy excavation and construction here, creating a facility designed to hold the food, clothing, and tools necessary to sustain a remote penal outpost.
