Victoria Bridge Abutment

historic

The Victoria Bridge Abutment is a large, rusticated stone archway in South Brisbane, standing as a heavy masonry remnant of the city’s fourth river crossing. Designed by Queensland Government Architect Alfred Barton Brady and completed in eighteen ninety-six, it originally supported the southern end of a steel and wrought-iron bridge that served Brisbane for seven decades. While the rest of that bridge was demolished in nineteen sixty-nine to make way for a modern concrete successor, this section was left behind, preserving its classic stone podium and original tram tracks.
