Queensland Parliament

Queensland Parliament House is defined by its grand, three-story facade of honey-colored Woogaroo sandstone, designed in the French Renaissance Revival style with a prominent mansard roof. It stands at the corner of George and Alice Streets, overlooking the Brisbane River and the City Botanic Gardens. While it now appears as a stately monument to democracy, its construction was nearly abandoned in the mid-nineteenth century. When the colony's main lender collapsed in eighteen sixty-six, the project froze so completely that a firm offered to buy the construction crane for scrap metal.
