Clubhouse Lane, located off Hindley Street in the Adelaide central business district, takes its name from a hotel that occupied the site during the mid-nineteenth century. The original Club House Hotel opened in eighteen thirty-nine as the Victoria Hotel, serving as a temporary home for the South Australian Club, a group of prominent early colonists that included the city's surveyor, Colonel William Light. By the eighteen fifties, the hotel had become a lively social hub known for hosting mock trials in a feature called the Judge and Jury Club, where patrons were invited to participate in debates and theatrical performances over meals.
