Carr House National Historic Site

You are approaching a two-storey, soft yellow house in the James Bay neighborhood of Victoria. Built in eighteen sixty-three, this Picturesque-Italianate villa features a projecting central bay, a ground-floor veranda, and round-headed windows. It was the birthplace and childhood home of Emily Carr, the painter and writer who became one of Canada’s most celebrated artists. Richard Carr, her father, commissioned the house for his family when Victoria was still a young colonial capital, and Emily spent her first seventeen years here.
