Helmcken House is a one-storey log structure recognizable by its shingled exterior and the two-storey wood-frame additions that reveal how the home grew over time. Built in eighteen fifty-two, it stands on its original site as the oldest house in Victoria. It was constructed for Doctor John Sebastian Helmcken, a surgeon for the Hudson’s Bay Company who married Cecilia Douglas, the daughter of Governor James Douglas.
