The Royal BC Museum sits along the Inner Harbour of Victoria, identifiable by its concrete facade and the adjacent Fannin Tower that overlooks the water. Founded in eighteen eighty-six, the museum began as a small collection housed within the provincial legislative buildings, then known as the Birdcages. Concerned that indigenous artifacts and local natural specimens were being rapidly exported by international collectors, thirty prominent citizens petitioned the government to establish a formal home for these items.
