The Royal Battery is a stone semi-circle fortification marked by fourteen embrasures and a row of artillery pieces facing the Saint Lawrence River. Named in honor of King Louis the Fourteenth, the structure was built in sixteen ninety-one by the Governor General of New France, Louis de Buade de Frontenac. He ordered its construction following a British attack on the city the previous year, intending the battery to serve as a vital link in the coastal defense system.
