The Hôtel-Dieu de Québec occupies a large, religious complex in the heart of Old Québec, distinguished by stone walls that enclose a monastery, a church, a garden, and a cemetery. Founded on August sixteenth, sixteen thirty-seven, by the Duchess of Aiguillon, it holds the record as the first permanent hospital established in North America north of Mexico.
