The Former National Congress Building is a neoclassical structure defined by its balanced façades, disciplined symmetry, and grand porticos supported by Corinthian columns. It occupies an entire city block in central Santiago. Construction began in eighteen fifty-seven, though the building was not fully finished until eighteen seventy-six. After a fire destroyed the interior in eighteen ninety-five, it was rebuilt and reopened in nineteen hundred and one.
