A marble statue of Pedro de Valdivia stands within a small plaza on the slopes of Cerro Santa Lucía. The figure depicts the Spanish conquistador wearing armor, though he is bareheaded, holding a scroll in his right hand that represents the document used to found the city of Santiago. Inaugurated on January first, eighteen seventy-seven, this sculpture was created by the artist Aristodemo Costoli.
