Santiago Central Market

landmark

The Santiago Central Market is defined by its ornate, vaulted ceiling of cast iron, a structure that resembles a Victorian train station more than a traditional colonial marketplace. This metal framework was fabricated by the firm R. Laidlaw and Sons in Glasgow, Scotland, and shipped in numbered pieces around Cape Horn to arrive in Chile for assembly. Inaugurated on August twenty-third, eighteen seventy-two, the building replaced the city's previous Plaza de Abasto, which had been reduced to ash by a fire in eighteen sixty-four.
