La Moneda Palace occupies a full city block in downtown Santiago, distinguished by its wide, horizontal neoclassical facade and thick walls built from stone and brick. Originally commissioned in seventeen eighty-four by the colonial governor to serve as the Royal Mint of Santiago, the structure was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca. While Toesca died before its completion in eighteen oh five, his work established a style characterized by balanced courtyards and Roman Doric influences.
