Castillo Hidalgo sits atop Santa Lucía Hill, recognizable by its stone walls and bastions that command views across the city. Built in eighteen sixteen by order of Spanish governor Casimiro Marcó del Pont, the site began as the Santa Lucía Battery, a military stronghold intended to defend Santiago during the Spanish Reconquest.
