Santa Lucía Hill rises sixty-nine meters above the surrounding streets as a rocky, green-covered volcanic remnant in the center of Santiago. Known to the indigenous Mapuche people as Huelén—the rock of pain—it was renamed by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia when he arrived on the feast day of Saint Lucy in December fifteen forty. Valdivia founded the city of Santiago at the foot of this hill on February twelve, fifteen forty-one.
