The Parroquia de la Veracruz stands in the Lastarria neighborhood with a facade marked by two Doric columns at its entrance and a bell gable holding two bells. Construction of this neoclassical temple began in eighteen fifty-two, following a proposal by Salvador de Tavira to create a memorial on a site long rumored to be where the city’s founder, Pedro de Valdivia, had once lived. Designed by the French architect Claudio Brunet de Baines and finished by Fermín Vivaceta in eighteen fifty-seven, the church was built to strengthen ties between Chile and Spain.
