The Portal Fernández Concha defines the southern edge of the Plaza de Armas with a seven-story neoclassical façade featuring an arcaded ground floor. Built in eighteen seventy-one, the structure rose from the ruins of the colonial Portal Sierra Bella after a fire destroyed the site two years earlier. Its construction was financed by brothers Pedro and Domingo Fernández Concha, who commissioned British architect W. Hovender Hendry to design a space meant to house the city's most luxurious retail establishments.
