The National Institute for Blind Youth occupies a substantial building at fifty-six Boulevard des Invalides. Founded in seventeen eighty-five by Valentin Haüy, it stands as the first school for blind students in the Western world. Haüy, a linguist who was moved by the sight of blind people begging on the streets, sought to prove they could be educated by teaching a young man named François Lesueur to read using embossed letters.
