The Markthalle Stuttgart is recognizable by its expansive glass roof and the Art Nouveau frescoes depicting market traders that decorate its main Dorotheenstraße facade. Inaugurated in January nineteen fourteen, this hall replaced an earlier eighteen sixty-four structure that had been built after a merchant tragically froze to death during an outdoor winter market. Architect Martin Elsässer designed the current building using reinforced concrete girders to create a spacious, light-filled interior.
