Old Castle

The Altes Schloss, or Old Castle, sits at the heart of Stuttgart with thick, medieval outer walls that give it the appearance of a fortress. Despite this defensive exterior, the building hides an elegant inner courtyard surrounded by three stories of Renaissance arcades. These arched walkways were added in the mid-sixteenth century when the dukes of Württemberg transformed the structure from a water-moated stronghold into a residential palace.
