Hoppenlau Cemetery

The Hoppenlau Cemetery is defined by its tall, mature trees and weathered gravestones that rise above the grass in the center of the city. Established in sixteen twenty-six as a hospital burial ground, it sat outside the original town walls and eventually became the primary cemetery for the rapidly expanding population of Stuttgart. By the time it closed in eighteen eighty, thousands of burials had taken place here, creating a space that over the following century developed a quiet, overgrown character.
