Neues Schloss Stuttgart

The Neues Schloss, or New Palace, dominates the Schlossplatz with its long, symmetrical three-winged façade of shell limestone and a distinctive central dome. Commissioned in seventeen forty-six by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, the palace was intended to transform Stuttgart into a second Versailles. The project was notoriously difficult, plagued by shifting architectural plans, significant funding disputes with local officials, and a devastating fire in seventeen sixty-two that halted construction for years.
