Kasematten Düsseldorf

food drink

The Kasematten occupy a stretch of the lower Rhine wharf, marked by thick stone arches and vaulted chambers built around nineteen hundred and two. These structures were originally part of a flood protection system, created when the riverbank was shifted outward and the area was used as an industrial loading zone for harbor cranes and freight wagons. The name itself reflects this history, as the term refers to the fortified, underground vaults typically used in military architecture to withstand artillery fire.
