The Alter Hafen in Carlstadt occupies the site of what was once the Berger Hafen, a fortified harbor connected to the city's sixteenth-century citadel. While its name suggests a traditional port, this basin was filled in long ago and currently sits above an underground parking structure and tunnel system, cutting it off from the Rhine.
