Rheinufer, alter Anlegeplatz

The Rheinufer—the Rhine riverbank—in the Carlstadt district is defined by a massive engineering project carried out between eighteen ninety-eight and nineteen oh two. To secure the city against flooding and modernize its shipping, planners pushed the river's edge thirty-seven meters further into the water. This effort created an entirely new waterfront, replacing the ancient, chaotic shoreline where the city had once struggled against the river’s currents and constant siltation.
