Bautzner Tor

The name Bautzner Tor in Dresden refers to two very different places. You might be hearing about the historic city gate of Altendresden, which stood at the end of the Hauptstraße near Albertplatz. Built in sixteen thirty-two as part of the local fortifications, it was also known as the Black Gate or the Lausitzer Tor. This structure is long gone, having been torn down by eighteen twelve, yet it remains anchored in literature as the setting where the main character of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s novella The Golden Pot runs into an old woman’s basket of cakes.
