The Nagamachi Samurai District is marked by its distinctive earthen walls, which line the narrow, stone-paved lanes. During the Edo period, these walls were constructed to provide privacy and defense for the high and middle-ranking samurai families who resided here under the authority of the powerful Maeda clan. Today, these yellow-toned earthen walls remain a primary feature of the area, and in winter, they are covered with straw mats to protect them from frost and cracking.
