Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum

The Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum consists of two unassuming, single-story wooden houses set behind hedges, lacking the grand gates and earthen walls seen at other samurai residences in this district. These buildings preserve the living quarters of the ashigaru, the lowest-ranking foot soldiers of the Edo period. While ashigaru in other parts of Japan were often confined to cramped row houses, those in the Kaga domain were granted detached homes with their own small gardens.
