Seison-kaku is a sprawling wooden villa located within the grounds of Kenrokuen Garden. Built in eighteen sixty-three by the thirteenth lord of the Kaga clan, Maeda Nariyasu, this structure was intended as a retirement home for his mother, Shinryu-in. The building is distinguished by a twenty-meter-long garden viewing deck, known as the Horsetail corridor, which is held up by a cantilever that reaches ten meters back into the building. This engineering choice eliminated the need for support beams that would have otherwise obstructed the view of the garden.
