Elevazione, created by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone in two thousand one, is a nine-meter-tall bronze tree trunk held aloft by five living alders. It sits along the green, tree-lined avenue of the Westersingel. The bronze casting functions as a rigid anchor, while the surrounding alders grow and push the sculpture further upward over time, acting as a living, symbiotic support system for the metallic form.
