Torgallmenningen

Torgallmenningen is a wide, rectangular promenade in the heart of Bergen, defined by its uniform stone buildings and broad, open space. While it functions today as a primary meeting point for locals and a venue for festivals, the square originated as a radical urban design project. Following the Great Fire of seventeen oh two, which destroyed much of the city's wooden architecture, city planners established the area as a massive firebreak. By creating this intentional, thirty-eight to forty-eight meter gap, they hoped to prevent future flames from jumping across the city.
