Holbergsallmenningen

Holbergsallmenningen is a wide, open thoroughfare on the Nordnes peninsula that cuts straight across the neighborhood from the harbor toward the area known as Klosteret. Its significant width—approximately forty meters—was mandated by royal decree following the city fire of sixteen eighty-six. These wide streets, or allmenninger, were designed as firebreaks to prevent flames from consuming the entire city, a recurring threat in Bergen’s history of wooden construction.
