Håkonshallen is the largest surviving secular building from Norway’s medieval period. Thick grey stone walls and a high gabled roof define the structure, which occupies space within the grounds of the Bergenhus Fortress near the harbor. King Håkon Håkonsson commissioned this royal hall in the thirteenth century to project the power of the monarchy at a time when Bergen functioned as the nation's capital.
